Haymarket – Boston, MA

Early in January I went on a short photowalk in Boston’s North End.  I decided to make things interesting so I didn’t bring my digital camera and just shot with film.  Of course the problem with that strategy is that I didn’t finish the roll, and it took weeks for me to get it developed.  Finally I finished it up last week, got it developed, and scanned it.  I took these shots in the Haymarket, which we walked through at the end of the day.

A few photos of the produce vendors at Haymarket.  The colors here are pretty vibrant even on cold gray days like this one.  (Olympus OM-1 w/ M-Zuiko 35mm f/2.8 on Rollei Digibase CN 200)

Shooting Film – Boston, MA

When I returned from Brooklyn I decided to send my M9 off to the Leica service center in NJ.  It was acting all wonky and I wanted to get if fixed up before we go away this winter; also I was getting frustrated with its out-of-calibration rangefinder so the time had come.  While the M9 was vacationing in New Jersey I decided to shoot some film, which I had not done for quite some time.

The religious folk were out doing some preaching in Boston Common.

A Short Walk – Boston, MA

This past weekend was one of those not-so-productive weekends for me.  I spent some time working (writing) and running errands, and Sunday was rained-out for half of the day.  So there wasn’t that much time for photography.  By the time I got myself up and out of the house on Saturday it was quite late – I am actually embarrassed to say how late – and there wasn’t too much daylight left.  I took a short walk with my camera.

This is on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay.  It is a spot just east of Mass Ave where artists and musicians gather to sell their wares and entertain the passers-by in exchange for their loose change.  I took this photo from across the street with my 50mm lens wide open at f/2, which is why it is a bit soft.  I also processed it with a film emulator in Lightroom; this one is Fuji 800Z from VSCO film.  It is not quite the same as film, but I like the high ISO look that some of these pre-sets create.

Trump Tower – Chicago, IL

I have been pretty busy lately and it has been getting darker earlier so there has not much time to get out and take photos.  So I decided to revisit Chicago.  No, I didn’t go back I just spent some time going through the photos I took when I was there last month I found this one that I like, but didn’t bother to process the first time through.  Here is a “looking up” photo of the Trump Tower.

Mayor’s Cup Criterium – Boston, MA

Last Saturday Tammy and I went out to see the big criterium bike race in downtown Boston.  It was fun to watch.  I am a big fan of cycling so it is always nice to see some professional cycling up close and personal.  In deciding which camera to bring with me to the race I opted for my rangefinder over the SLR.  If I had wanted to capture photos of the cyclists racing around at top speed I would have brought the SLR, but I decided I wanted to take some street-style photos of the spectators and passers-by.  In the end I spent most of my time watching the race and very little time taking photos.  I did manage to snap this shot that I really like.  It makes me laugh every time I look at it.  Could you imagine a Great Dane sitting on your lap?

Downtown Walkabout – Chicago, IL

I did do some more exploring in Chicago other than spending time at the Cloud Gate.  I had every intention of seeing everything in the downtown area, but alas one can only accomplish so much in three hours.  In any event, I tried to make the best of it, and here are some photos form my stops along the way.

I walked over the Frank Gehry designed “BP Bridge” that connected Millennium Park with an adjacent park.  Here are a couple of pictures of the bridge with the city in the backdrop.

Cloud Gate – Millennium Park – Chicago, IL

Last weekend I was in Chicago for the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s multidisciplinary thoracic oncology meeting.  It was a good conference.  There was lots of good science and medicine presented in the meeting, but after two and a half days in an air-conditioned hotel I really needed to get outside and see some of the city.  The conference finished up on Saturday mid-day and my return flight was not until the early evening so I went on a personal photowalk around the downtown area.

First stop was Millennium Park.  I had been there a couple of times before, but only briefly on both occasions.  I had a great time walking around and through the “Cloud Gate” sculpture (below), and watching people interact with it.  It is like the ultimate fun house mirror, outdoors, and open to everyone.

Street Portraits in Harvard Square

Yesterday I went on another photowalk with the regular crew that I have been meeting up with for the past year.  We met up in Harvard Square in Cambridge and walked from there through Central Square and ended up in Kendall Square.  It was hot, hot, hot and to make it worse it was humid.  I think I lost several pounds of water weight in sweat, but it was fun anyway.  We seem to have got a great group of people who none of whom are overly self-absorbed or full of themselves.  Just a bunch of nerds with cameras.

Before meeting up yesterday I stopped at the bank to get some singles; no I was not going to go to a strip-club afterward.  I wanted to get some money to give to homeless people and street performers.  I feel bad when I take photos of these people and don’t give them something in return.  So here are some folks that I “met” yesterday and a little about how we met.

This guy wandered up to the entire group and asked for $1 from each of us.  I told him I thought that was a lot of money for doing nothing, and I asked him if I could take his photo for $1.  He agreed.  While I was shooting this photo he tried to up the price to $5, but I didn’t give in.  I gave him a $1 bonus for the nice smile.
